What research-use-only means in practice
Material designated for research use is supplied for in-vitro and laboratory work by qualified personnel. It has not been evaluated for safety or efficacy in humans, is not manufactured to pharmaceutical standards, and carries no therapeutic indication.
Claims, labelling and record-keeping
Compliant handling means keeping the research-use designation intact on any container the material is transferred into, retaining the lot and COA alongside experimental records, and not restating vendor documentation as a clinical or therapeutic claim.
- Preserve the research-use-only designation on aliquots and secondary labels
- Store lot numbers and analytical records with the corresponding experimental data
- Do not present purity documentation as evidence of clinical safety
- Do not resell or redistribute material outside its intended research context
Where the documentation fits
COAs, chromatograms and lot records support reproducibility — they let another researcher know exactly what material produced a result. That is their purpose, and it is separate from any suggestion of human suitability.

- No. Research-use-only material is not a drug, has not been evaluated for human safety or efficacy, and is not supplied for human or veterinary consumption, diagnosis or treatment.
- Does a COA make a compound safe for human use?
- No. A Certificate of Analysis documents purity and identity of a laboratory chemical. It says nothing about clinical safety, and it does not change the research-use-only designation.
